Same but Different Hamilton

In 2021, Ryan Moran began a project to demonstrate how our streetscapes have changed in Hamilton.

The series will showcase downtown locations that have building uses vastly different from those that previously occupied the same space. Where Then and Now Hamilton is meant to highlight where we can do better, Same but Different is meant to educate and inform Hamiltonians about the history of its spaces.

Spring Brewery – June 15, 2021

The Spring Brewery (built in 1842) at Bay street North & Mulberry street was One of the most popular brands of the Grant-Lottridge Brewing Co.; it also became one of early Canada’s most famous brands, exported across the commonwealth; It was a huge site that is now shared by Central Park and the Hamilton Fire Department

Tuckett Tobacco – May 11, 2021

Tuckett Tobacco, located on Queen Street North, north of York Boulevard and taking up the block between Queen Street North & Oxford Street from 1890 until 1966

Old City Hall / City Centre Mall – May 4, 2021

King William, where the old City Hall tower has been replaced by Centre Mall (Eaton’s Centre) developments

Birks Building / FirstOntario Credit Union – April 28, 2021

The Birks Building at King Street and James Street, built in 1883 & demolished in 1973 (amidst protest); Famously called “Canada’s most beautiful building” by Oscar Wilde (though this may have been a backhanded compliment); The clock is preserved at the Farmer’s Market

Capitol Theatre / Escape Manor – April 19, 2021

The Capitol was built in 1917 with a capacity of 2300 seats. The lobby still stands as Escape Manor, which is an upgrade from what it was. The grand auditorium portion was demolished in 1973, and is now the parking lot across from Seventy-seven on King William Street.

Hyland Theatre / Pawnbroker – April 5, 2021

The Hyland Theatre was on this site on King Street East where there is now a pawnbroker.
