Map of Water Fountains
This is a combined map of all of the City of Hamilton’s drinking fountains (60) and water bottle filling stations (35), what we’re collectively calling the City’s 95 public water fountains. It might seem like a weird distinction, but the City considers them to be different kinds of infrastructure.
History of the Downtown Sparrow’s Water Fountain map
On May 20, 2021 the City of Hamilton tweeted that “staff turned on all bottle fill station water fountains this week” but when researchers checked out the City’s website, there wasn’t a map with locations. After contacting the City to confirm this, and with their help, we were able to map the locations of all of the active water bottle filling stations across the City and posted them in the map below. In June, we were able to add all of the drinking fountains to this map and what you see below is a historical representation of the work that we did to track these locations.
Why do we say it’s an historical representation? Because on July 13, 2021, in response to the map we posted, and the coverage that this issue received through local and social media, the City of Hamilton posted a Drinking Fountain Finder on its website, which will eventually make the data in this map obsolete.
The City also shared an internal PDF map of water fountains but has not been able to confirm that these fountains are still in operation at this time.
*This resource is up to date as of July 14, 2021. It will not be updated going forward as the City has committed to keeping this information up to date on its own map on the City’s website.
