Cycling Master Plans (1973-2018)
What’s now called the City of Hamilton’s Cycling Master Plan started, as far as we can tell, in 1992 with the Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Bicycle Network Study (when Hamilton was still the Region of Hamilton-Wentworth) and was updated and rebranded in 1999 as Shifting Gears.
Before 1992, we know of 2 other plans that addressed cycling in Hamilton, namely Bikeways Hamilton (1973), a plan to create an on-street network, and Hamilton Bikeways (1987), a status report that mainly addresses a plan for signage.
Shifting Gears was ultimately updated in 2009 and then, in 2018, reenvisioned as part of the larger Transporation Master Plan.
These documents are meant to provide an ongoing history of the City of Hamilton’s plans for cycling infrastructure and to complement our Map of Cycling Infrastructure in the city.
